Cetaceans Boat Effort 2003-2010

Cetacean monitoring from the boat was undertaken twice a month starting approximately at 9am with two slightly different survey routes: one on the leeward side (north) of St Helena and one on the leeward side (north) extended to Speery Island (south west) of St Helena. During the survey position of the boat and environmental data were collected every 15 minutes. This survey method is no longer carried out.

Lineage	The initial start position of the boat was recorded in the harbour and once every 15min the boat's position and environmental conditions were recorded. The speed of the boat was 16km/hr or 8-10knots. Environmental conditions were recorded as higher seastates and high glare could impair sighting rates and counting accuracies. The data collected were: sea state (beaufort scale), swell height, cloud cover, visibility.
